I kind of blocked out the whole licking part. Yech.
Like the old joke: "Why does a dog lick his balls?"
"Because he can."
But I definitely agree with you that the hairball thing may be part of their plot to show us who's in control. And I'm not so sure the dead rodents on the doorstep aren't a threat rather than an offering.

Because if you do not...and the biggest employer fails...then it will have a domino effect putting you out of work too. It makes far more sense to spend 25 billion to bail out the auto makers than how many trillion to bottom feeding mortgage manipulating bastard bankers

Yup...thats me too. A big hairy Maine Coon...lazy, strong and committed back yard serial killer. :) The only drawback to being a cat is the having to clean your asshole with your tongue part...well, that and hurling hairballs like mine does...although he does get some weird sort of look on his face like..."heh heh heh..lets watch him step on this one in his socks..."

Those PETA people are among the biggest, most disgusting hypocrites I've ever seen or heard of.

First of all, they don't believe that anybody should have pets of any kind, when pets can be extremely beneficial and provide a great deal of joy and companionship, whether or not people already have a great deal of joy or companionship going on in their lives.
There's a pet store not far from where I live that used to sell all kinds of pets, including domestically-bred exotic birds. Thanks to pressure from PETA, that pet store no longer sells exotic birds.
Secondly, while I myself don't believe in killing animals just for their fur, I think that PETA has employed some rather disgusting and dangerous tactics. Physically assaulting people in the street who they see wearing a jacket or coat made out of any kind of leather or fur, for instance, is not unheard of on the part of PETA members. Yes, it's also true that flour can also do a considerable amount of injury if a large enough amount of it is inhaled at one time also, in addition to having harmful long-term affects on people who're constantly exposed to flour dust.
The interesting thing is that one only sees PETA members in the downtown sections of cities. They wouldn't dare go into areas like Southie or Charlestown, for instances, lest they get the crap kicked out of them.

While it's true that there are some very corrupt unions who really don't care about working people, it's also true that unions have also served to protect average, ordinary everyday working people from such things as unfair labor practices, retaliatory firings/layoffs, and, yes, have raised the standard of living for ordinary working people and/or their familes. The purpose of a Union is also to redress any legitimate grievances that working people may have, which is also iimportant.
Some companies, unfortunately, do anything to get around the Union, and are known for union busting. The decline of unions, which began 40 years ago when President Nixon took power, snowballed under Carter, Reagan, G. H W. Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton, and has worsened under G. W. Bush/Cheney.

Continued under Carter

Only because Carter could not get effective fuel economy standards through Congress.
But he could get a bailout loan for Chrysler through Congress.
Interesting that.
And don't forget the Michigan Democrats who were carrying the auto executive's water.
This is a self-inflicted wound by auto executives who thought that lobbying and marketing were more important than technology and quality control. And this blindness started in the 1960s, the heyday of US autos.

How it all started: (The way I see it)

It mustn't be forgotten that while it's all too easy to put it all on the pasat 8 years of Bush/Cheney rule, but (not to defend them), the present "Republicans vs. the Auto Industry" situation can also be attributed to at least two important things:
A) The decline of unions, which began 40 years ago, when President Nixon took power and held two terms.
B) The decline of the steel industry. Unfortunately, however, the steel industry's refusal to go modern also contributed to the downward spiral.
Both of the above started under Nixon, continued under Carter, and then snowballed under Reagan, G. Hl W. Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton and then became even worse under G. W. Bush/Cheney.
A couple of thoughts

Bankruptcy is less of a viable option for automakers than say Circuit City or Delta Airlines.
People will spend $60 on a video game or $300 for an airline ticket with a bankrupt company, but would be reluctant to spend $20,000 to buy a car from a company which might not survive the warranty period.
If they can't increase sales, even vitiating their union contracts won't be enough to allow them to emerge from bankruptcy as a viable concern.
Secondly, the ripple effect of the failure of one or all of the U.S. automakers extends beyond the companies and their suppliers.
NAFTA has resulted in a continent-wide auto production system. 400,000 people in Ontario are employed by the automakers, and Mexico also has many jobs tied to our auto industry.
If the U.S. allows the automakers to fail, what would be the impact on our trading partners?
The automakers have made some disastrous decisions, but so have the financials. How does one make the distinction? Where do you draw the line? What does the U.S. look like when this is all played out?
There are no easy answers, and no perfect solutions.
